It all began with an idea. In this case… a question. Where are all the good contractors? Having a difficult time finding a contractor that was knowledgeable, detail-oriented, reliable, trustworthy, communicated well and showed up when they said they would, founder of Model Contractor, Shillae Davis, became the contractor she wanted to hire.

Her initial mission was to become skilled enough to tackle some projects herself and knowledgeable enough to hire the right contractor for the job. That initial idea, turned to trade school, which turned into a career she loved. Beginning right out of trade school in the plumbing trade, Shillae soon found herself enamored with all things construction. Her previous experience in the financial and tech space gave her an edge. Model Construction is a beautiful marriage between the professionalism and organization of the corporate world and the craftsmanship of skilled tradesperson.

Shortly into her construction course, Shillae would learn that her favorite part of her program was plumbing. Fresh out of trade school, Shillae submitted her resume to many of the top plumbing companies in Brooklyn. One day, while walking with her son, she spotted a branded plumbing truck of one of her earlier submissions. She asked if the tech for any tips on how to get an interview. 48 hours later, she was hired as a plumbing apprentice. In early 2020, the world shut down. Shillae was fur-lowed from her plumbing employer and had to stay home to care for her young son. Later that year, the phone started ringing and never stopped. Model Contractor was born.

Shillae was a single woman operation for a while until she gave into the pressing need to expand. “I am great at what I do because I love what I do.” These are words Shillae lives by and the cornerstone of the culture of the Model Contractor team.
